MALAWI ON COURSE FOR MEETING WITH HOSTS
Fisher Kondowe's second half goal ensured a second successive victory for Malawi in the Cosafa Senior Challenge and kept them on course for a quarter-final meeting with hosts South Africa.
The Flames overcame the Comoros Islands 1-0 in their Group B match in Secunda on Tuesday and need only draw their last match against Namibia at the Lilian Ngoyi Stadium on Thursday to finish top of the standings.
Malawi, whose coach Kinnah Phiri previously worked in South Africa's Premier Soccer League, have a full haul of points after also winning their opening game at the weekend against Lesotho.
Namibia lie second in the standings and must beat Malawi in Thursday's match to usurp the Flames and go through instead to the quarter-final in Witbank on Saturday against the South Africa developmental team.
Namibia slipped up against Lesotho, who came from a goal down on Tuesday to draw 1-1 in their Group B game in Secunda.
Thabane Rankara came on as a substitute to equalise in the 80th minute for the Basotho after Namibia had led at half-time through Jamunovandu Ngatjizeko.
It was Lesotho's first points of the campaign but they have no chance of progress, even if they beat the Comoros Islands in their last match in Secunda on Thursday.
Both Malawi and Namibia are past finalists in the annual southern African championship, this year being hosted by Mpumalanga Province.
