LOCAL DERBY FOR COSAFA SENIOR CHALLENGE FINALHolders South Africa will take on neighbours Mozambique in the final of the Cosafa Senior Challenge on Sunday after both teams won their respective semifinals in Thualmahashe on Wednesday. The enticing derby was set up after South Africa beat Zambia 1-0 in the first of the semifinals, followed by a 2-1 win for the Mozambicans over Madagascar. Mozambique's Mambas are through to the final for the first time in 12 year of participation in the annual southern African championship. South Africa, who won last year's event in Bloemfontein, progressed after a wonder goal from Lefa Tsutsulupa, who caught out the Zambia goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene with a long range free kick in the 14th minute. He hit the ball with pin point accuracy from more than 40 metres out, looping over the head of Mweene, for the only goal of the game. But South Africa coach Serame Letsoaka admitted his side were a little fortunate to win the match against a Zambia team who squandered many opportunities. Mozambique profited from a mistake from Madagascar goalkeeper Jean Chrysostome Raharison to snatch their victory, with the keeper kicking a clearance against his own defenders and the loose ball being snapped up by Moamed Hagi for the Mambas. Hagi's second goal in as many games came after the two sides were deadlocked 1-1 at half-time. Tico-Tico opened the scoring for Mozambique in the 19th minute but the lead lasted just five minutes before Praxis Rabemanajara equalised with a header from a free kick. Sunday's final kicks off at 15h30, preceded by the third place play-off between Zambia and Madagascar. Both games will be screen live on SuperSport. |
