Zimbabwe vs South Africa

IT is Zimbabwe in the final after beating South Africa 3-2 after penalties as captain Method Mwanjale who had a sterling performance at the heart of defence was named Man of the Match. He was presented the award by Deputy Prime Minister Prof Arthur Mutambara as the fans enjoy beating their bitterest rivals albeit via penalties.

It did not matter that match had its highs and lows, the moment it was refered to the jury of penalties, it had to be Zimbabwe because they have penalty saving goalkeeper in Edmore Sibanda. And he did not disappoint by duly saving two while Keamohetse missed completely.

Zimbabwe did not need to take their last kick. It is a grand final and Zimbabwe are in the running to win the title for the fourth time.

 

Thuso Phala scores for South Africa, it is now 2-1 Zimbabwe as Tafadzwa Rusike makes it 3-2 with Zimbabwe's fourth kick.

Maqoba Ngwenya scores South Africa's second with their fourth and Ashely Rambanepasi makes it 4-2 but Keamohetse misses the fifth kick to give Zimbabwe the lifeline to the final 4-2.

South Africa survive as the defence show signs of fatigue. With 15 mintes to go the match is getting faster and more aggressive as teams go for the jugular looking for a winner.

68 min South Africa responds by making a substitution of their own with Maqoba Ngwenya replacing George Lebese but South African keeper is on the deck receiving treatment.

65 min Zimbabwe makes a substitution. The dimunitive dribbling wizard Chris Semakweri comes on for the ineffective Benjamin Marere and the crowd love. He immediately goes in to receive a corner from the right.

60 min The ref who is yet to book any player has been leeting too many fouls go unpunished and in the process Zimbabwe centre back Daniel Vheremu is tackled from behind by Matle but is let free as the defence wobbles off injured. It is still 1-1 though.

54 min GOAL Zimbabwe draw level as Phillip Marufu quiet all afternoon profits from poor defending by South Africa to beat Jacob Mokhasi with a close finish. For second, South Africa could not clear their lines and Marufu left his marker Warren Bishop to beat the keeper who had come out of his goal to close down. It is 1-1 and it is game. The fans are finally awake and the noise levels rise.

46 min The Mauritician ref signals resumption and Zimbabwe attacks from the off after dispossessing Wayne Matle

Teams troop back for the second half action. Zimbabwe trailing by 1-0 emerge first from the dug out as South Africa follow.

The mood at the break is sombre, only few smiles illuminates the stadium from the ball juggling of Tongai Mbidzo, who holds a record of juggling the ball for the longest time without dropping it. He has been juggling the ball since the halftime whistle and is sure to do it until resumption.

45 min Referee blows to end the first half in which the goal aside had very little to count from. South Africa go to the breather leading 1-0 thanks to the Bacela goal that speaks a lot about Zimbabwe defensive organisation and awareness.

44 min A good tee down b y Cuthbert Malajila allows Rambanepasi space to shoot, but from nowhere the impressive Warren Bishop blocks the effort.

40 min The stadium is stunned resembling a funeral parlour while the media centre ignites a debate whether the goal was legitimate or not. But it was a genuine goal and the ref was spot on. 1-0 South Africa

37 min GOAL..South Africa take the lead from a seemingly offside position when Lennox Bacela alone in the box beat keeper Edmore Sibanda after a short free kick. The entire Zimbabwe defence remained static expecting an offside flag but with none coming Bacela had the easiest of tasks betaing Sibanda at his near post.

33 min Centre back Daniel Vheremu gets a round of applause from the capacity stadium when shielded the ball from George Lebese shepherding it out for a goal kick

32 min Phillip Marufu could not latch onto a Tafadzwa Rusike pass.

30 min A beautiful cross by Asani Nhongo is directed over the bar by Benjamin Marere as Zimbabwe attack again. South Africa defence working overtime to clear the lines but Mhlangu is effective on the left

25 min Left back Keamohetse is injured and play is stopped.

23 min Goalkeeper Jacob Mokhasi makes a messy of a routine catch and allows the ball to slip through b ut lucky it tricles out for a corner that is wasted by Zimbabwe

20 min A dangerous ball by Mapemba causes rearguard problems for South Africa as Phillip is caught off side just outside the box as Warren Bishop is guilty of sloopy defending.

15 min Ashelye Rambanepasi wins a battle of possession in the centre circle against Wayne Matle and sends Gilbert Mapemba free on the right whose cross into the box was cleared by Sakhile Mhlangu for a corner. It is still goalless at Rufaro

13 min Asani Nhongo fouls Oupa Manyisa after losing the ball and SA quickly takes the free kick with Joseph Makhanya but Zimbabwe regains possession with Mthulisi Maphosa. Still the game is crying for some good moves

10 min Zimbabwes' Cuthbert Malajila failed to connect a good pass from Tafadzwa Rusike after left clear by the South African defence as the match still struggles for a piece of magic to ignite the stadium and the match. It is still 0-0 and both sets of keeper yet to be called to serious work as play is concentrated in the middle of the park.
