Malawi take step closer to see finals at AUSC Region 5 Games

Zainabu Kapanda netted a hat-trick as Malawi took a giant step towards the semifinals of the Women’s Under-20 competition at the 2018 AUSC Region 5 Games with a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Lesotho in Group A on Monday.

The win moved the Malawians into top place in the pool, level on points with hosts Botswana but ahead on goal-difference.

They will now need just a point from their final game against Zimbabwe (KO 09h30) on Tuesday to book a semifinal spot, while Botswana will also be confident of doing so as they tackle already ousted Lesotho in a game that will be played at the same time.

Kapanda was the star of the show for the Malawians, but there was also a brace from Chimwemwe Bonongwe, including one of her trademark long-range goals.

Yamikani Mhango scored the sixth goal for the Malawians, while Nteboheleng Mohosela grabbed a consolation for Lesotho.

In Group B, South Africa roared back from 2-0 down to beat Namibia 4-2 to complete the fixtures in the pool. Both teams had already sealed their place in the semifinals before the game, but South Africa ensured they would finish top.

Captain Kylie van Wyk and Angula Asteria put Namibia into a deserved two goal lead, but from then on in it was all South Africa.

Sibulelo Holweni scored a brace to go with goals from Ntombifikile Ndlovu and Thambolinye Mzwaneli as they fought back to secure the three points and a morale-boosting victory.

There will be the completion of the two groups in the Boys Under-17 competition on Tuesday.

Eswatini have already secured their semifinal place from Group A after two wins and come up against Botswana (17h00) in a straight shoot-out for top spot.
If the latter lose they could yet be caught by Zambia, who meet a Namibia side that have already lost both their games in the other pool match which will be played simultaneously.

Group B is much tighter, with all three sides on three points after two games.
Angola take on Malawi at 14h00 and South Africa meet Tanzania at the same time in two games that are too tough to call. It is a pool that will go down to the wire.
