ANGOLA COACH STEPS DOWN
Manuel Jose resigned as coach of Angola on Saturday, ending a brief stay several months before the end of his contract.
Jose told a news conference in Luanda he had turned down the offer of a new contact for personal reasons, the state-run Angop news agency reported.
“Everybody expressed their satisfaction with my work here but at the age of 64 what is left of my coaching career is short,” he told the press conference.
The Portuguese coach was appointed eight months ago on a one-year deal to take charge of Angola’s side for their hosting of the African Nations Cup finals.
Angola finished top of their first round group but were then disappointingly eliminated by an under-strength Ghana in the quarter-finals.
Jose’ assistant, Zeca Amaral, had been appointed caretaker coach until a new permanent choice is made later, the Angoalan Football Federation said.
