ZIMBABWE WON’T KEEP TROPHY
Zimbabwe will not keep the new Coasa Castle Cup trophy in purpuity as has been reported this week.
On Monday Harare’s Herald newspaper made the erroneous assumption that, as it was Zimbabwe’s third success in the tournament, they now get to keep the trophy but the reporter failed to realise that it is a new trophy that has been cast for the tournament and it will be at least three years before any country is able to lay claim to it.
The first trophy for the tournament was kept by Angola after they became the first side to win it three times in 2004.
Now the race is on again to see who will be the first side to win the new trophy three times … and get to keep that as well.
Zimbabwe can do it by 2007, if they win the next two editions of the southern African championship to add to their success in the 2005 event.
For the rest it could take a little longer!
