ANGOLA ONE GAME AWAY FROM WORLD CUP
Angola took a major step closer to qualifying for the World Cup finals in Germany winning their penultimate qualifier with a 3-0 home triumph over Gabon in Luanda on Sunday.
The result lifted Angola three points clear of their nearest challengers Nigeria, who play later on Sunday night, and Zimbabwe at the head of the Group Four standings.
A win in their final qualifying match in Rwanda on October 98 would ensure a first ever appearance at the World Cup finals for the Angolans, who survived an early penalty appeal against them on Sunday to beat Gabon.
Frantic appeals for a handball were turned down by the referee before Gabon’s Rene Nsi Akoue deflected an effort from Mendonca into his own net for Angola’s opening goal in the 22nd minute.
Benfica striker Mantorras added a second goal just before the half-time break to increase Angola’s lead.
The final goal for the home side came on the stroke of the final whistle converted by substitute Ze Kalanga.
