ANGOLA COACH IN CAIRO FOR DRAW
Angola’s coach Luis Oliveira Goncalves arrived in Cairo on Wednesday for the MTN Africa Cup of Nations draw saying his side has set themselves the target of getting past the first round of the tournament.
Oliveira Goncalves, who has secured a first ever place for Angola at the World Cup finals and won himself hero status in his own country, said his team were under pressure to succeed at the tournament in Egypt to verify their new-found status among the leading teams on the continent.
But because of a lack of experience in international tournaments, they had set themselves “a more realistic target” of making it past the first stage at the finals, which start on January 20.
Angola are competing in the MTN Africa Cup of Nations for only the third time.
In their last two appearances at the 1996 edition in South Africa and two years later in Burkina Faso they failed to get past the opening round.
