Amajita take aim at third Vodacom Cosafa under 20 title success

Johannesburg, Friday, 2 December 2005 – Amajita’s class of 2005 are ready willing and able to see of the challenge from southern Africa’s leading soccer playing countries, when they begin the defence of the Vodacom Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) Under 20 Youth Championships, at the Sugar Ray Xulu stadium in Durban on Saturday (16h30 kickoff).

Coached by the experienced Styles Phumo, the Vodacom-sponsored Amajita know that a winning start over the team that they beat in last year’s final in Pretoria, is essential if they are to have a chance of entrenching SA’s reputation of being the home of the Vodacom Cosafa Under 20 Youth Championship trophy.

If the Amajita are successful in defending their title, it will be their third triumph in the history of the tournament, having lifted southern Africa’s premier under 20 soccer title in 2000 and 2004. Zambia were crowned champions in 1999, while Zimbabwe recorded victories in 2002 and 2003, with Angola claiming the honours in 2001.

A full compliment of southern African teams, consisting of Angola, Botswana, Lesotho Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, are expected to present a tough challenge to the hosts.

The Amajita squad has been the platform that the likes of Lebohang Mokoena (Orlando Pirates) and Steven Pienaar (Ajax Amsterdam) have been through en route to playing for Bafana Bafana, and many a rising star is expected to become a household name in the minds of SA’s soccer loving public during the eight days of action-packed soccer in KwaZulu Natal.

Durban has experienced soccer mania at its best, with Vodacom, the greatest supporter of SA supporters, having provided soccer fans with the ultimate Vodacom Soccer Experience in the big build up to the action,  with road shows, competitions, promotional give aways and other forms of entertainment ensuring that fans have been informed of the forthcoming tournament and are ready to head to the stadiums to support their favourite team.
