Angolan international defender Yamba Asha has signed for Swedish club Osters FF, at the end of a drug ban that saw him miss the World Cup finals.
Yamba Asha, who was voted best player of the Cosafa Castle Cup in 2004, has moved to the struggling club from Luanda’s AS Aviacao, the club said on Monday.
The left back missed out on both this year’s African Nations Cup finals in Egypt and the World Cup finals in Germany because of a nine month drug ban imposed by FIFA after he was caught using an unidentified illegal substance during a drug test in Angola’s World Cup qualifying campaign.
Angolan officials said Yamba Asha had taken a flu remedy which contained a banned substance but this has never been confirmed by FIFA
Yamba Asha, 30 last week, was the only player to play in all 12 of the matches Angola needed to qualify for the World Cup finals but despite an appeal for clemency from Angola had to watch the tournament in Germany from the sidelines.
Yamba Asha will join his 33-year-old compatriot Figueiredo at the club, who are second from bottom in the Swedish league standings.
