Striker Benjani Mwaruwari has been named as Zimbabwe’s new captain, taking over from the injured Peter Ndlovu.
The Portsmouth striker will lead the country when they start their MTN Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Malawi in a Group 12 encounter in Blantyre on Saturday, October 7.
The 27-year-old, whose recent form has helped his unfashionable side near the summit of the English premier league, said he had been honoured by the appointment.
“It will not be easy to replace Peter but I want to do as well as he did and even better,” he said.
“We have to concentrate on the next Nations Cup fials and if we united we will do very well as a team.”
Next week’s clash will have an ironic twist for the Bulaway-born forward, whose parents hail from Malawi.
