Former Bafana Bafana striker Shaun Bartlett scored with the last touch of the game to give Kaizer Chiefs a dramatic 1-1 draw in the South African premier soccer league derby against Orlando Pirates in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Bartlett, who returned to South Africa in June to play for the country’s most popular club, headed home from a corner four minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game to send the majority of the 75,000-capacity crowd into raptures.
The 34-year-old Bartlett, who had only been used as a second half substitute because of an ankle injury, had been the subject of abuse from his own club’s supporters in recent matches because of his inability to find the net since his high profile move back from his spell in the English premier league.
Pirates, who have now not won a derby against their arch rivals in the last five encounters between the two Soweto-based clubs, had taken an eight minute lead through Benedict Vilakazi.
Both clubs, who have traditionally dominated the championship in South Africa, have both made slow starts to the season but the point lifted Pirates to 12th place in the standings while Chiefs stayed fifth.
Saturday’s match was the last at Soccer City before the start of renovations which will increase the stadium’s capacity to 92,000 for the 2010 World Cup finals.
