MOZAMBIQUE TO MEET ZIMBABWE

Hosts Mozambique and Zimbabwe both laboured to wins over Indian Ocean island opposition to set up a date in Sunday’s Cosafa Castle Group A final in Maputo.

Mozambique took 51 minutes before capitalising on their overwhelming possession against the Seychelles, opening the scoring through Bino before going on to win 2-0 in Saturday’s second semifinal.

Earlier, Zimbabwe played the entire second half down to 10 men but were still too good for Madagascar, winning the first of the day’s semifinals 1-0.

The winners decide the outcome of the group at Maputo’s Machava stadium on Sunday, preceded by a third place play-off match between Saturday’s losers.

Debutant Bino squandered several chances as Mozambique repeatedly misfired in front of goal before springing the visitors’ offside trap to score their opener.

Bino scored from close range for a second goal in the 77th minute as Mozambique doubled their lead in a game in which they forced 17 corners to nil for their island opponents.

Zimbabwe, who fielded a seocnd-string team, scored after just eight minutes when Kingstone Nkata stabbed home a cross from Ralph Matema but they were forced into a rear guard action in the second half after Carrington Gomba was sent off just before the interval.

Gomba received his marching orders after picking up a second caution.

Madagascar, playing a first match under new coach Herve Arsene, kept Zimbabwe pinned back with the numerical advantage but never set up any clear goal scoring chances.

Sunday’s winner of the group advance to the semifinal of the annual southern African championship, competed for annually by the 13 members of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations.
