MAMBAS THROUGH TO SEMIFINALS

Mozambique advanced to the Cosafa Castle Cup semifinals by beating Zimbabwe on post-match penalties in the final of their mini tournament in Maputo on Sunday.

Failure to take their chances throughout the 90 minutes forced the hosts to the drama of a penalty shootout, where Mozambique triumphed 5-4 after both sides had taken six kicks apiece.

The match ended goalless after 90 minutes and Julinho netted the decisive kick to give Mozambique a place in the final four of the annual southern African championship for the first time in four years.

Mozambique striker Bino, who scored both goals on Saturday when the hosts beat Seychelles 2-0 in their semifinal encounter, missed a glaring chance midway through the first half after being set up by Portuguese-based wingback Paito.

Substitute To had three chances after coming on in the second half but spurned the opportunities after Mozambique failed to take advantage of their dominance.

Earlier, Madagascar ended a run of six games without a goal in the competition to register a 5-0 win over the Seychelles in the third place play-off match..

Paulin Voavy scored a hat trick and Claudio Ramiadamanana and Faneva Ima Andriatsima got the other goals.

Two more mini groups are scheduled for May and July and the group winners join Mozambique and holders Zambia in September’s semifinals.

The annual southern African championship is competed for by the 13 members of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations.
