The French-controlled island of Reunion won the gold medal at the Indian Ocean Island Games, beating hosts Madagascar 7-6 on post-match penalties after a goalless draw in the weekend’s gold medal match.
It was the third gold for Reunion in the football tournament at the games.
Cosafa member Madagascar missed a penalty, awarded during the match and Dimby Rabeariniala had the misfortune to squander his kick in the shootout in front of some 40,000 spectators at the Stade Mahamasina in Antananarivo.
There was embarrassment for Mauritius in the bronze medal match as they lost to the tiny French-controlled island of Mayotte.
Their match ended 1-1 after extra time with Mayotte winning 4-2 on penalty kicks.
