Mozambican international defender Nando died in a car accident on his way home to play for his country in a MTN Africa Cup of Nations qualifier this weekend, killed along with his wife and two children, his South African club Black Leopards said on Thursday.
Nando, who full name was Fernando Matola, was involved in an accident on Sunday but his identity only confirmed on Thursday after he had initially been reported missing.
Mozambican officials added his car had veered off the road and hit a tree, bursting into flames.
He had been traveling from Louis Trichardt in the north of South Africa, where his club is based, to Maputo to join up with the Mozambican side for their Nations Cup qualifier in Tanzania on Saturday.
Nando was the regular full back for the Mozambicans, who must win their match in Dar-es-Salaam to keep up their slim hopes of qualifying for the finals in Ghana in January.
Details of Nando’s death follow in the same week as South African international Gift Leremi was killed in a car accident in Johannesburg on Monday.
