Zambia keen on Zesco players for COSAFA Cup

Beston Chambeshi is lining up reinforcement from defending FAZ Super Division champions Zesco United for the 2018 COSAFA Cup.

High profile players from Zesco are missing from Chipolopolo’s 30-member preliminary list due to their recent 2018 CAF Champions League Group D obligations.

However, with the competition set to resume on July 17, Chambeshi is now free to summon from top players from the 2017 FAZ Super Division champions.

“We are waiting to hear from Zesco because we left them out for the assignment they had,” Chambeshi said.

High on the list of possible Zesco call-ups is striker Lazarus Kambole.

Kambole has so far this year scored three goals for Chipolopolo since making his international debut at 2018 CHAN in Morocco and has many in the 2018 CAF Champions League for Zesco.

He has another four goals in the FAZ Super Division this season.

Chambeshi also disclosed that he is bolstering his defence with the recall of Buildcon defender Isaac Shamujompa who will join the team when it regroups this Sunday in Lusaka.

Also expected is Zambia’s home-based team captain and Zanaco defender Ziyo Tembo who missed last weekís four-day camp in Lusaka due to a bout of Malaria.

Ziyo only resumed training with Zanaco on May 17.

“We are waiting for Ziyo who is sick. If he recovers, he may join us,” Chambeshi said.

Meanwhile, Chambeshi said the team is set to stay in camp until next week’s departure for South Africa.

“We wonít break camp when we regroup on Sunday because it is a crucial week and time is not with us,” Chambeshi said.

“But it is too early in football to name the team because they maybe injuries and that’s why I said let us wait for the Zesco players and see where we can start from this week.”

Chipolopolo will enter the 2018 COSAFA Cup at the quarterfinal stage on June 2 when they face Namibia in Limpopo.
