Tanzania became the first team to seal a place in the semifinals of the 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship when they defeated Botswana 2-0 in their Group B clash at the Madibaz Stadium in Nelson Mandela Bay on Saturday.
The win means the East African guest nation will not be caught at the top of the pool as their six points can’t be beaten and they would be ahead of both Botswana and Zimbabwe on head-to-head, which is how group positions are calculated in the tournament.
Zimbabwe were given a scare when they needed a late goal to defeat South Sudan 2-1 in the other fixture in the pool.
Tanzania scored in either half to defeat last season’s beaten finalists Botswana as both Donisia Minja and Mwanahamisi Shurua netted their second goals of the campaign in what was a thoroughly professional display from the side, especially Player of the Match Fatuma Suleimani.
Botswana and Zimbabwe will now each hope to get a win when those sides clash on Monday to take one of them to six points and in the running as the best-placed runner-up to also advance to the semifinals.
Zimbabwe grabbed an early goal in their contest against South Sudan as Rudo Neshamba netted after 12 minutes and it looked as though that would be the start of a rush of scoring.
But South Sudan showed they had learnt much from their 7-0 defeat to Botswana in their opener and were more compact and defensively sound, while also creating some opportunities themselves.
They were rewarded when Chieng Riek raced clear to score on 77 minutes and suddenly it looked as though they would earn a first point at the tournament.
But Zimbabwe would not be denied and Marjory Nyaumwe scored a winner six minutes later to deny the Sudanese a famous result. South Sudan captain Amy Lasu was named Player of the Match.
The second round of matches in Group C will be played on Sunday with Uganda facing Eswatini in the opening game at 12h00 CAT.
Uganda were held to a draw in their opener against Namibia and will want more precision in the opposition box against an Eswatini side who must get a win to keep their semifinal hopes alive. A draw suits nobody.
Zambia, who beat Eswatini 5-0 in their opener, can take a giant step towards the knockout stages of they beat Namibia in the second game (15h30 CAT).
With only the top team in each pool and the best placed runner-up among the three groups going through to the semifinals, the margin for error for all the sides is very small.
The teams are also building towards the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers that begin next month.

La Tanzanie se rapproche du dernier carré
La Tanzanie et le Zimbabwe ont passé une excellente journée au Madibaz Stadium samedi à l’occasion de la 5e journée de la COSAFA Women’s Senior Championship. Les Tanzaniennes se sont imposées 2-0 face au Botswana tandis que les zimbabwéennes ont passé de justesse l’écueil du Soudan du Sud (2-1).
Le Zimbabwe a eu toutes les peines pour s’imposer samedi. Face à une belle équipe incarnée par le Soudan du Sud, les Zimbabwéennes ont dû patienter jusqu’à la 83e minute pour enfin souffler en s’imposant 2-1. Neshamba a ouvert le score à la 12e minute avant que Riek n’offre une bouffée d’air frais aux Soudanaises en égalisant à la 77e minute.
Mais Nyaumwe est sortie de sa boite à la 83e minute pour arracher les trois points alors que l’on se dirigeait vers un nul. Les Soudanaises ont cependant trouvé des motifs de satisfaction puisque leur capitaine Amy Lasu a obtenu le trophée de joueuse du match.
La Tanzanie a déjà un pied en demi-finale. Les Tanzaniennes, invitées au tournoi, possèdent six points au tableau après leur victoire samedi. Comme lors de leur première sortie, on a pris la même recette pour valider ce nouveau succès. Un but de Shurua et un autre de Minja ont assuré la victoire de ce pays situé sur la corne de l’Afrique.
Pourtant, le Botswana faisait figure d’épouvantail dans cette rencontre après sa démonstration d’il y a deux jours. Mais les zèbres n’ont pas tenu dans ce duel et cèdent la pole position à leur bourreau du jour. Très en vue tout au long de la rencontre, la Tanzanienne Fatuma Suleiman a été récompensée de ses efforts en repartant avec le titre de joueuse du match.
Deux joutes rythmeront la journée de dimanche avec en match d’ouverture, l’Eswatini qui affronte l’Ouganda à midi. A 15h30, la Zambie sera aux prises avec la Namibie. Les deux rencontres auront lieu au Madibaz Stadium.
Les Zambiennes n’ont pas tremblé au cours de leur match d’ouverture en s’imposant 5-0 face à l’Eswatini. C’est fort logiquement qu’elles règnent sur le groupe C. Elles sont d’ailleurs les seules à avoir pu engranger les trois points dans cette poule. Selon toute vraisemblance, le duel face à la Namibie ne devrait pas trop leur faire peur. Les Namibiennes n’ont pas réalisé une entame de rêve en partageant les points il y a deux jours.
Ce nul contre l’Ouganda a placé la Namibie dans une position délicate. Il faudra impérativement l’emporter ce dimanche pour espère être de la partie en demi-finale. Les Namibiennes ne peuvent plus se permettre de se faire distancer.
L’Eswatini semble être condamné à se maintenir en position de lanterne rouge. Même si ses représentantes affrontent l’Ouganda, il y a fort à parier qu’elles ne puissent pas tirer leur épingle du jeu. Une nouvelle contre-performance de leur part sera synonyme d’élimination.
Tanzania soma e segue e Zimbabwe volta sonhar!
As vice-campeãs (Botswana), que entraram com o pé direito na presente edição do campeonato da COSAFA, ao aplicar uma goleada a frágil selecção do Sudão do Sul (7-0), viram-se incapacitadas de repetir tal proeza perante uma forte resistência da convidada Tanzania, que acabou vencendo (2-0), assaltando deste modo, a primeira posição, do Grupo B, no desfecho da segunda jornada do Campeonato Sénior Feminino, em Port Elizabeth, África do Sul.
Por sua vez, as “Brigth Starlets” (alcunha da selecção do Sudão do Sul), consentiram a segunda derrota, desta feita diante do Zimbabwe por 2-1. Ainda assim, o Sudão do Sul conseguiu marcar o tento de honra por intermédio de Chieng Riek a passagem do minuto 77. Um golo histórico que premiou o esforço colectivo desta emergente seleccao que está emm busca de experiência internacional.
Com este resultado, as tanzanianas estão a um passo de garantirem a sua passagem para as meias-finais, bastando para tal vencer o Sudão do Sul, nesta segunda-feira, na terceira e última jornada da fase de grupos. Aliás, nada está perdido para as “Mars”, nome de guerra da equipa do Botswana, que ainda tem mais três por disputar. Ainda que não avance como a primeira classificada do grupo, a turma do Botswana poderá ser repescada como a segunda melhor classificada de todos os grupos.
A Tanzânia tem sido visitante regular de eventos da COSAFA ao longo dos anos, mas o Sudão do Sul representante do Conselho das Associações de Futebol da África Oriental e Central (CECAFAFA) se apresenta pela primeira vez neste evento a convite da sua homóloga do Conselho das Associações de Futebol da África Austral (COSAFA) .
Já a Uganda, treinada pela experiente sul-africana Shilene Booysen, que já foi membro-chave da equipa técnica das Banyana Banyana antes de assumir o desafio de técnica principal, entra para a história do futebol deste país com a missão de projectar e tirar o futebol feminino do anonimato.
Por sua vez, o Zimbabwe é a única equipa fora da África do Sul, que ergueu o troféu do Campeonato Feminino da COSAFA em 2011 e, conta com um forte esquadrão de atletas, que num passado recente participaram nas eliminatórias da primeira edição da Liga dos Campeões Femininos da TOTALEnergies CAF | Eliminatórias COSAFA, em Durban.
Segundo o regulamento da prova, as 12 equipas serão divididas em três grupos, cada um com quatro e apenas a melhor classificada de cada grupo avançará para as meias-finais, juntamente com o segundo melhor classificado de todos os grupos.
Anotar que IX edição do Campeonato da COSAFA teve inicio na terça-feira, em Nelson Mandela Bay e que deverá terminar no dia 9 de Outubro, com a nação anfitriã ( África do Sul) a procura de conquistar o inédito quinto título consecutivo.
Por conseguinte, o Grupo C entra em cena amanhã para a conclusão dos jogos da segunda jornada. O Eswatini que teve uma entrada em falso, após ter averbado uma derrota frente a Zâmbia (5-0), receberá no Madibaz Stadiun, a convidada Uganda (12.00 horas), que empatou sem golos diante da Namíbia. Já a Zâmbia, líder à condição terá que vencer a aflita Namíbia (15.30 horas) para alimentar a possibilidade de avançar a fase seguinte sem pressão.
