Playmaker Aisha Masaka scored five goals as East African guest nation Tanzania stunned South Africa with a 6-1 victory to take a giant step towards the final of the 2020 COSAFA Women’s Under-17 Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay on Sunday.
The tall Masaka took her tally for the competition to eight with a superb individual display that showcased all her pace and technical ability, as South Africa’s hopes of reaching the decider appear over.
Mwanamvua Haruna hit the crossbar early on as Tanzania started much the brighter, before her corner found its way into the back of the net off home defender Janica Andrews.
And then it became the ‘Masaka Show’ as she scored four times in the first half. First a towering header from a cross, and then another from a Haruna corner.
Masaka then beat the offside trap and supplied a simple finish, before she sprinted clear of the defence to toe-poke past the exposed South Africa goalkeeper.
The home side did pull one goal back in the second half when Shehat Mohamedi unwittingly turned the ball into her own net when a header from a teammate struck her in the face.
But Masaka had the last laugh as she crashed the ball into the back of net in injury-time to finish on a high.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe rallied late on to claim a 3-2 victory over Comoros Islands in a sensational comeback that saw them score three goals in the final 13 minutes.
Zimbabwe had been defeated 7-0 by South Africa in their opener, ad looked on course for a second loss after Noussrat Mistoihi and Mohamed Dalila put Comoros 2-0 up in the first half.
Zimbabwe won a penalty just seconds before the break, and when Bethel Kondo saw her effort saved by Comoros goalkeeper Said Amina it looked as though it would not be their day.
But they continued to create chances at will and finally found a way back into the game when Morelife Nyagumbo crashed in a floated shot from the edge of the box on 78 minutes.
They were level four minutes after that when Ropafadzo Maferefa headed in after a goal-mouth scramble.
Comoros looked shell-shocked and left acres of space at the back for Brenda Ndarowa to coolly slot home the winner with a low shot into the corner of the net deep into injury-time.
The games will continue on Tuesday when Zambia can seal a place in the top two and subsequently the final if they beat Comoros (kick-off 12h30), who are yet to register a point.
The other match sees Tanzania battle Zimbabwe (15h30) in a clash between two other sides with final ambitions.
The COSAFA Women’s Championship will return to action on Monday when all the groups will be concluded.
South Africa have already sealed their place in the semifinals as the top team in Group A following their back-to-back wins and face Comoros Islands (kick-off 15h30) in their final match.
At the same time there will be a clash between Eswatini and Angola, where the former can seal their semifinal place as the best-placed runner-up if they get a victory. They will not be able to overtake South Africa at the top due to their head-to-head record.
A draw could also be enough to move to the next stage, while defeat would see Angola go ahead of them and bring in teams in the other pools in the race for best runner-up.
When calculating the best runner-up, the results against the team that finishes bottom in Group A are discarded to effectively turn it into a three-team pool and ensure parity with Groups B and C.
Zambia and Malawi (12h30) go head-to-head in a potentially epic clash in Group B that will be centred around Malawi’s Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa, and Barbra Banda for the Copper Queens.
All three play in China and are stars in that country, and it should be a fascinating contest.
Botswana and Zimbabwe (12h30) clash in the final match in Group C, where a point will see the Mares progress to the semifinals for the second year running.
No fans will be allowed access into the stadiums, but the senior championship matches will be broadcast LIVE on SuperSport’s Variety4 in South Africa, and Variety 4 Africa and Go Select 2, as well as being streamed LIVE on www.cosafa.tv. The Under-17 games will also be on COSAFA.TV.

La Tanzanie en roue libre
Le Zimbabwe s’est fendu d’un retournement de situation spectaculaire pour arracher sa première victoire dans la présente édition de la COSAFA U17 Championship. Les Zimbabwéennes se sont imposées 3-2 contre les Comores. Dans l’autre rencontre au programme, l’Afrique du Sud a été sévèrement battu par la Tanzanie (6-1) et dégringole au tableau.
Aisha Masaka s’est muée en véritable bourreau pour porter la Tanzanie. L’attaquante a inscrit cinq buts dans cette rencontre. Alors que c’est Haruna qui a ouvert le score. Méconnaissables, les Sud-Africaines ont été dépassées dans tous les compartiments. D’ailleurs, même si la Tanzanie a concédé un but, il ne porte pas la marque de l’Afrique du Sud puisque c’est Noela Luhala qui a inscrit un but contre son camp.
Les Comores pensaient tenir leur premier succès dans la compétition jusqu’à la 78e minute. Mistoihi avait ouvert le score pour l’unique formation issue de l’océan Indien dès la 4e minute. Courageuse et surtout impliquées, les Comoriennes ont ensuite réalisé le break à la 43e minute. Jusqu’ici tout allait bien.
Mais passer l’heure de jeu, on sentait que les Comoriennes commençaient à lever le pied, la fatigue se faisant sentir sans doute. Le Zimbabwe n’en attendait pas moins pour refaire son retard. Nyagumbo d’abord débloquait enfin le compteur du Zimbabwe à la 78e minute. Maferefa permettait ensuite aux Zimbabwéennes de recoller au score à la 82e minute. Dans le temps additionnel, Ndarowa offrait les trois points à sa formation quelques minutes après son entrée en jeu
Dans le groupe C, la Tanzanie n’a plus son destin en main et semble être au bord de l’élimination. Les Tanzaniennes ont déjà disputé leurs deux rencontres du groupe C. Elles ont obtenu une victoire et une défaite dans cette poule. Aujourd’hui, le Zimbabwe sera aux prises avec le Botswana à 12h30 au Gelvandale.
C’est sont les Zèbres qui apparaissent comme les favorites dans ce duel. Elles n’ont besoin que d’un point pour assurer leur place en demi-finale. Dans le groupe B, c’est un véritable choc qui sera à suivre au Wolfson Stadium. La Zambie sera aux prises avec la Malawi. Les deux équipes ont chacune une victoire au compteur.
Le Malawi a toutefois fait meilleur impression dans la compétition grâce notamment à ses 9 buts inscrits contre le Lesotho samedi dont six qui portent la marque de Tabhita Chawinga. Les Shepopolos comptent, elles, dans leur rang une certaine Barbra Banda, auteur de trois buts jusqu’ici. Tous les ingrédients sont donc réunis pour ce rendez-vous aux allures de finale. Il n’est restera qu’un au terme des 90 minutes d’engagements. Le Lesotho quant à lui, est déjà éliminé du tournoi après deux revers.
Enfin, les pensionnaires du groupe A entreront en lice à partir de 15h30. L’Angola croisera le fer avec l’Eswatini alors que l’Afrique du Sud sera aux prises avec les Comores. Les Sud-Africaines, championne en titre, sont idéalement placées pour sortir du groupe. Elles possèdent six unités au compteur et partiront largement favorites contre les Comores qui poursuivent leur apprentissage dans le haut niveau.
L’Angola est dernier du groupe mais peut toujours refaire son retard. Il faudra pour cela l’emporter face à l’Eswatini. Ce dernier occupe la deuxième position au classement avec un succès au compteur. Ce duel s’annonce donc explosif.

Zimbabwe vence no apagar das luzes e Aisha ajuda Tanzania na goleada sobre África do Sul
A selecção do Zimbabwe protagonizou, hoje, no Westbourne Oval Stadium, uma surpreendente reviravolta, ao vencer por tangenciais 3-2, a sua congénere das Comores, em desafio a contar para a segunda jornada, do Campeonato Feminino de Sub-17 do Conselho das Associações de Futebol da África Austral (COSAFA), disputado no sistema de todos-contra-todos, numa única volta. Nyagumbo (78´), Maferefa (83´) e Ndarowa (90´) marcaram para o Zimbabwe e Mistohi (4´) Dalila (42´) visaram para as Comores. O torneio teve início no passado dia 4 de Novembro devendo terminar a 14 do mesmo mês.
Este resultado oferece algum alento ao Zimbabwe, considerando que ainda tem pela frente mais dois jogos por realizar, o mesmo que se pode dizer em relação as Comores e, os restantes adversários. Na prática só a vitória interessa a todos. Dado o número inferior das equipas (5), esta prova será disputada num sistema de todos contra todos devendo disputar a final, a equipa com a melhor pontuação e a segunda melhor de todas.
Entretanto, a convidada Tanzania faltou respeito as anfitriãs, África do Sul, aplicando uma pesada derrota (6-1), que deixou marcas profundas a equipa caseira, que só foi compensada com o autogolo de Shehat Mohamedi (69´). As tanzanianas saíram ao intervalo a vencer por cinco (5-0) bolas sem concorrência, tendo a avançada Aisha Masaka, marcado cinco que a colocam na liderança isolada, na lista das melhores marcadoras do torneio com oito (8) golos.
As sul-africanas subestimaram as suas adversárias e, foram subjugadas por conta disso, na incontestável vitória da equipa da Tanzania, que entrou com tudo para vencer este jogo. Meio caminho andado para a Tanzania que já soma seis pontos.
Neste cenário são poucas as possibilidades de as treinadas de Simphiwe Dludlu, técnica sul-africana chegar a final, uma vez que conseguiu amealhar apenas três pontos e, com ainda um jogo por disputar. Ainda assim, o destino da equipa da casa só será conhecido na última jornada.
Lembrar que, a primeira edição desta competição foi conquistada pela convidada selecção do Uganda que venceu a sua congénere da África do Sul por 2-1, na final realizada, no Estádio Francois Xavier, onde Juliet Nalukenge foi eleita melhor jogadora em campo e melhor marcadora do torneio com 18 golos marcados. Infelizmente as representantes da África Ocidental não estão presentes este ano.
Começar bem e terminar mal
Impunha-se que as Comores, assim como o Zimbabwe vencem-se o jogo, afinal, ambas foram derrotadas, na jornada inaugural pela Tanzania (5-1) e África do Sul (7-0), respectivamente. As treinadas de Issa Saifdine (Comores), não se intimidaram com o aparente favoritismo que se atribuía a emergente selecção do Zimbabwe. Mesmo, depois de ter entrado a perder, o Zimbabwe conseguiu dar a volta ao texto e conquistar os três pontos.
A prova disso foi dada a passagem do quarto minuto da contenda, quando a avançada a serviço do FCO, Noussrat Mistohi, pontou o primeiro golo, numa bela jogada de contra-ataque bem desenhada. Isolada no corredor central, a artilheira que é também detentora de uma técnica individual notável, não teve dificuldades em desembaraçar-se da guardiã contrária. Mistohi marcava o segundo golo na sua conta pessoal.
Embora inexperiente nestas andanças, as representantes insulares mostraram ter uma equipa disciplinada tacticamente e que soube exponenciar os seus processos de jogo. Rápidas nas transições e implacáveis a defender-se, assim foi o comportamento da selecção das Ilhas das Comores ao longo da primeira etapa.
Apesar da forte pressão, o Zimbabwe não encontrava soluções eficazes para reverter a história do jogo. O sentido de oportunidade aliado ao rigor táctico, permitiu com que as insulares voltassem a abanar as redes contrárias, quando estavam jogados 42 minutos. Mohamed Dalila, que vinha embalada do corredor direito, conseguiu desferir um petardo que originou em uma defesa incompleta da guarda-redes, Timmly Kavhura, para o golo inevitável golo. Estava feito o 2-0.
A cambalhota
Ainda no terceiro minuto de compensação, após o fim da primeira parte, a selecção do Zimbabwe beneficiou-se de uma grande penalidade, que infelizmente não foi sabiamente aproveitada. Bethel Kondo, chamada a cobrar o castigo máximo, não teve a frieza suficiente para “abater” Bem Amna, keeper das Comores. E foi com o sorriso no rosto, que as Comorianas foram refrescar-se.
A entrada para a segunda parte e, com um forte domínio territorial, a autora do primeiro golo esteve próxima de dilatar o marcador, não fosse a barras transversal a devolver a bola. Mau grado para o Zimbabwe, que nesta etapa desperdiçou uma mão cheia de oportunidades claras de golo.
Só depois de tanta insistência, finalmente equipa orientada por Ennie Konje, técnico do Zimbabwe conseguiu chegar ao golo, depois de um remate a meia distância que pegou desprevenida Ben Amna (reduzindo o placard para 2-1, por intermédio de Morelife Nyagumbo (78´) . Animadas e mais confiantes, as zimbabueanas igualaram o marcador(2-2) aos 83 minutos por Ropafadzo Maferefa. Para fechar as contas, Brenda Ndarowa atirou a contar já no apagar das luzes. Incrível capacidade de superação e recuperação do Zimbabwe, que ainda sonha com um lugar na final.
Na próxima jornada a formação das Comores terá pela frente a imparável Zâmbia, esta ultima que teve a felicidade de vencer os dois desafios já realizados. O jogo está agendado para esta terça-feira, as 12.30 horas, no Oval Stadium. E ainda, no mesmo dia e mesmo local pelas 15.30 horas, a Tanzania enfrentará a reanimada selecção do Zimbabwe.
