Mauritius back on the sand in Durban

Mauritius make a welcome return to the sand when they compete in the HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA Beach Soccer Championship that will be staged in Durban from September 25-October 1.

The island nation did not take part in last year’s championship with travel complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, but are hoping to make their mark this time round with renewed focus on beach soccer.

Zunaid Mall, who is technical director at the Mauritius Football Association, says they have scouted extensively on the island ahead of the up-coming championship.

“We organised a competition for beach soccer, and the response was fantastic,” Mall said. “We had an extensive programme of matches and ended up with the final on one of our public beaches. A scouting process was done during the course of all the games, and the team are in preparation for the tournament in Durban right now.”

Mauritius have previously made a single appearance at the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations when they played in South Africa in 2009.

It proved a chastening experience as they lost both pool matches to Nigeria (0-13) and Egypt (3-10) and finished last.

Mauritius are one of four COSAFA nations competing in Durban along with defending champions Mozambique, South Africa and Seychelles.

They are joined by a massively strong field from the rest of the continent that contains African champions Senegal, Egypt, Uganda and Tanzania.
They will compete in Group B alongside the last three of those visitors, opening their championship with a clash against Egypt on Sept. 25 (14h30 CAT).

The matches will be played at Durban’s South Beach Arena and will be streamed on COSAFA.TV.
