Men’s U17 and U20 teams to learn their COSAFA Championships fate on Monday

The draw for the COSAFA Men’s Under-17 and Under-20 Championships will be made in Nelson Mandela Bay on Monday as the participating teams learn their pool stage fate and their path to the potential trophy win.

Both draws will take place at 10h00 and will be streamed live on www.cosafa.tv.

The Under-17 draw will feature two pools of four teams each, with hosts South Africa the top seeds in Group A and defending champions Zambia the seed in Group B.

Of the remaining six sides, the top-ranked teams from 2019 – Angola, Botswana, and Malawi – will be placed in Pot 1, while Pot 2 will have the three lower-ranked sides – Eswatini, Comoros and Zimbabwe.

These rankings have been based on the performance of the sides at the 2019 edition of the tournament.

From Pot 1, balls are drawn out and the teams slotted consecutively into position two of Groups A (A2) and B (B2). The remaining ball will be placed in Pot 2 together with the other three balls.

Then drawing from Pot 2, balls are selected, and the teams slotted into position three in each of the Groups (A3 and B3); and into position four in each of the Groups (A4 and B4) respectively.

The top two sides in each group will advance to the semifinals, with the two finalists earning their place at the 2021 CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

The men’s Under-20 competition has 11 sides, with Groups A  and B containing four teams each, and Group C having three. The top team in each pool advances to the semifinals, along with the best-placed runner-up.

Hosts South Africa are seeds in Group A, defending champions Zambia in Group B and Angola will be the seeds in Group C.

The remaining eight sides will be placed in two pots each containing four sides and ranked based on their performance in 2019.

Pot 1 will contain Botswana, Malawi, Eswatini and Mozambique, while Pot 2 has Lesotho, Comoros, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.

From Pot 1, balls are drawn out and the teams slotted consecutively into position two of Groups A (A2), B (B2) and C (C2). The remaining ball will be placed in Pot 2 together with the other four balls.

Then drawing from Pot 2, balls are selected, and the teams slotted into position three in each of the Groups (A3, B3 and C3).

The two remaining balls will be selected and slotted into position four in Groups A and B (A4 and B4).

The two finalists in the competition will earn their place at the 2021 CAF Under-20 Cup of Nations scheduled for Mauritania in July.

The COSAFA Men’s Under-17 Championship will run from November 19-29, while the COSAFA Men’s Under-20 Championship will be played from December 3-13.
